AHIP & Carrier Certifications

AHIP and Carrier certifications are a crucial step for any agent hoping to sell Medicare insurance plans. These certifications help agents gain the knowledge and information necessary to confidently sell plans to their clients.

The AHIP certification is a standardized program that covers a wide range of topics including Medicare fraud, waste, and abuse, regulations, ethical selling and marketing, and more. By gaining an AHIP certification, you are committing to abiding by industry compliance standards.

Carrier certifications, on the other hand, are individual to the carrier(s) in which you are appointed to sell. These certifications ensure you fully understand the specific products offered by each carrier so you can be confident in the products you sell.

What is AHIP?

AHIP is the Medicare Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certification administered by America’s Health Insurance Plans. This annual testing is administered to insurance agents who focus on Medicare insurance plans to ensure the agent and consumer are protected throughout the sales process. Most insurance carriers require the AHIP certification to be completed each year before you are able to sell their products.

How many times can I take the AHIP test?

Most carriers allow up to 3 attempts to pass the AHIP certification. Thus, if you fail 3 or more times, you may lose your contracts with certain carriers for the year.

How long does my AHIP certification last?

Your AHIP certification will last one year from your testing date. However, you will need to renew your certification once per calendar year to stay compliant with each carrier.

How long does it take to complete AHIP training?

The training course prior to taking the certification test is not timed. So, you are able to study at your own pace. However, the certification itself is timed and you will receive a 2-hour window to complete the test.

Do I receive continuing education (CE) credits for taking AHIP?

In most states you will be eligible to receive CE credits for the AHIP certification. However, you may want to check with your states DOI as each state does have different rules regarding CE credits.

  • Aetna Medicare Compliance Training: Certifies producers to sell Aetna Medicare products only (AHIP alternative)
  • AHIP Medicare Training: Certifies producers to sell for multiple carriers, including Aetna.

  • If you are currently certified to sell Humana Medicare products for PY23, the recertification deadline is 5:00 pm EST on Thursday, November 30, 2023, to complete the PY24 Recertification.
